Angkor Wat, Cambodia, and Siem Reap, Best Travel Destinations 2015

Trip Advisor has just announced that Angkor Wat is the top Landmark in the world to visit, with Siem Reap voted 2nd best Destination in the world.

UPDATE: Lonely Planet has just voted Angkor Wat as the Best Travel Destination to go and see 2015.

I have been photographing here since 1999 and it is truly a magical place, Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The whole Angkor complex stretches some 400 km2, so there are always new places to discover.

Of all the different temples that make up the Angkor complex, Angkor Wat is the jewel in the lotus and also the most well preserved of them all.

The stone carving here is some of the most exquisite of all the temples.

Even though the place sees a large number of tourists each year, local life still goes on in and around Angkor Wat.

Siem Reap is the gateway to the temples and a town that has expanded over the years but never lost its charm.

There are now great places to eat and drink to suit all budgets in Siem Reap. I’m looking forward to heading back again this November. There are places available on the photography holiday if you want to improve your photography skills. Because of my extensive knowledge of the area I get you to the best places for the best light.

My photography holidays here also support some NGO’s helping street kids, the rural poor, people with disabilities and also a nature conservation project.

Travel photography tours and holidays to Burma, Cambodia, Marrakech & Venice.

Join me on a photography holiday to awe inspiring locations that I have a great working knowledge of, getting you to the best locations at the best time of day for stunning photographs.

The photographs on this blog are from last years photography holiday guests.

Burma I call photographers gold at the moment, a country that is starting to open up to the outside world after years of isolation. My photography tour to the Golden Land is unique as I have secured permits to travel overland between Mandalay and Lake Inle in the Shan State, a truly memorable experience as we travel through different landscapes on the way and getting to places tourism hasn’t hit.

We also travel by train from Bagan to Myingyan on a classic rail journey full of photo opportunities.

From Myingyan we take the ‘road to Mandalay’, made famous by Kipling.

Between Yangon and Bagan we fly as we also do between Lake Inle and Yangon. There is a full itinerary for the Burma photography tour on the website: http://www.digitalphotographyholidays.com

Cambodia is one of my favourite places for photography, a place I have been returning to since 1999, since then I have forged very strong friendships with local people and also NGO’s. This photography holiday is not just about photographing the magical temples it is also very much about the people too.

This photography holiday supports organisations that help street kids, disabled people and the rural poor, enabling them to receive education, training and skilled work.

On the photography holiday we spend a day with the floating village community on Tonle Sap lake, which helps to support their community handicrafts project and also the local nature reserve.

At the time of year we visit the water level is 10 – 12 metres above ground level, exposing only the tree canopy above water.

Release your Indiana Jones as we explore and photograph the magical temples at the best times of day for the best light, beating the crowds, literally having the temples to ourselves for an hour or more every morning.

Angkor Wat, Cambodia, A Journey, travel photography blog

My travel photography blog has just been published on the Manfrotto Imagine More website. It is a 4 part series, following my journey to the temples of Angkor Wat. I first visited them in 1999 when some of the temples were still heavily land mined. This weeks blog looks at these early years pre- digital photography and when I was photographing for an exhibition, giving some of the proceeds of sales of prints and cards to land mine clearance.

My great friend Chenti – tuk tuk driver for the Angkor Wat temples

I have just spent 3 weeks with my tuk tuk driver Chenti in Siem Reap, Cambodia who is such a great friend. I have set up a site for him to try and get more work for him. He is my lead tuk tuk driver for my Digital Photography Holidays and a close personal friend. He is extremely reliable, courteous and totally trustworthy.

Chenti has such a great knowledge and passion for  his country and I personally recommend him. He was 3 when the Khmer Rouge took over and lost his parents and 4 of his brothers and sisters but has an amazing forgiving heart, though this part of his life will remain hidden until your trust is gained.

Please take a look at his site that I have made for him http://angkorwattuktukdriver.wordpress.com/ and share it wherever you can.

His telephone number in Cambodia is +855979126232

Cambodia, Angkor Wat, Photography Hotspot

Angkor Wat Cambodia aerial shot from helicopter

After recently spending some more time in Siem Reap, which is home to the hundreds of temples that make up the UNESCO World Heritage Angkor Wat complex, I was on the lookout for more of those hidden corners.

Asia, Cambodia, Siem Reap, Angkor Wat, seated moss covered Buddha and leaf

After visiting the temples on and off for the last 14 years one thing I have learnt is that all those hidden corners would take a lifetime to discover.

I am fascinated by the power of nature over humankind of which Angkor Wat displays this perfectly, whether it be the iconic roots of trees slowly ripping apart the temples

Or the Earth devouring fallen down temples returning them back to where they once came.

Angkor Wat never fails to surprise as you wander around feeling like a true Indiana Jones.

There is always a smile caught in time watching over you.

Siem reap and its surrounds are also ripe pickings for the travel photographer.

Near to Angkor Wat lies the largest lake in South East Asia, Tonle Sap home to floating villages.

In the past I have supported land mine clearance charities from sales of prints and cards at exhibitions of my Angkor Wat photography, as Cambodia was at one time one of the most landmined countries on Earth.

After befriending a resident of the floating villages on my latest trip, I will be donating rice to the floating school on Tonle Sap lake when we visit with my travel photography holiday guests, as there are many orphans there whose parents were killed by bad storms on the lake.

Cambodia is a place that truly touches the heart and the myriad temples of Angkor Wat never fail to leave you in wonder and awe at their sheer beauty.

Top travel destinations in Asia 2014 – Burma (Myanmar) & Siem Reap, Cambodia, Angkor Wat

The 1st of February, wow, January just flew by here, probably because I had lots to catch up on after being out of the country for 9 weeks. Thanks to Twitter I quickly caught up with any new developments in travel

At the start of the year there are an array of travel awards which I watch with interest, Burma keeps coming up in them. The latest news I received through Twitter were the Wanderlust Travel Awards for and top country to visit is Myanmar, with Bagan number 5 for top city.

This town has grown over the years since my first visit in 1999 from a dusty wild west place to a town that now has amazing restaurants, bars, hotels, markets, shops and galleries.

It still caters to all budgets and cuisines but it can be a little sleepy in places.

Myanmar and Cambodia all feature in Conde Nast Traveller best places to go for winter sun.
